Adult chins weigh 400-800 grams (the female is larger than the male).

Rectal temperature of 102-103 F.

Heart rate of 200-350 beats per minute.

Chinchillas reach sexual maturity at 7-9 months.

Gestation usually lasys 105-115 days.

Average litter size is 2.

Babies weigh 30-60 grams.

Babies are usually weaned at arouned 6 weeks.

Their diet consists of all they can eat timothy hay and/or alfalfa, with their basic diet being pellets.  Treats should be given sparingly not to exceed 1 teaspoon per adult.  Suitable treats include dried fruits, nuts, sunflower seeds, and fresh carrot.

Average daily diet consumption per adult chin consists of one half to 1 cup hay, 1oz. pellets and 1 tsp. veggie treat.

Housing- a standard rabbit style cage 2' x 2' is ideal.  Ideal room temperature is 50-60 degrees F, temperatures higher than 80 can be fatal.

A dust bath should be given 2-5 times a week.

1. You will need a carrier or cage to transport your chin home in.  If you are local and only traveling a short distance a box might work.  If you are traveling hours to get a chin a carrier is a must for the comfort of your chin.  If you need a carrier please let me know ahead of time.

2. A chin proof cage at least 2 ft. square that is all metal, no plastic parts.  The holes in the cage wire should  be no bigger than 1/2" x 1" so your baby chin can not get out of the cage.  We sell cages ranging from $30-$100

3. We recommend a glass water bottle so your chin can't chew a hole in the bottle.  We sell bottles for $5.

4. A good quality chinchilla pellet with no treats or other extras in it.  Fresh alfalfa or timothy hay.  We sell pellets and alfalfa also.  Fresh, clean water.
